About Education
Besides getting personal opinions, you may want to also
consider obtaining a professional referral to a cosmetic
surgeon. All medical doctors (M.D.'s) and doctors of
osteopathy (D.O.'s) enter an additional training program
in a specific field after graduating from medical school.
This is known as a residency. (For more on D.O.'s see
www.aoa-net.org).
The recently graduated doctor may decide on a residency,
for instance, in plastic surgery, ophthalmology, general
surgery, dermatology, etc. The residency period typically
lasts anywhere from 3 to 5 years.
After completing the residency program, some doctors
opt to undertake one or more fellowships that can last
anywhere from 3 months to 3 years.
Although a fellowship is not required, this will offer
an opportunity to gain greater proficiency in a certain
sub-specialty, while still under the supervision of
an approved preceptor. Examples of fellowships are hand
surgery, cosmetic surgery, oculo-plastic surgery, and
facial plastic surgery.
Continuing education in the form of medical conferences,
seminars, medical journal articles, and specialty courses
also provide the chance for a practitioner to further
his or her skills and knowledge, although in a much
more limited way.
