General Guidelines to Choosing Your Plastic Surgeon
When it comes to plastic surgery, choosing your surgeon
is one of the most critical steps to obtaining a successful
outcome. Cosmetic surgery procedures are performed by
many different types of doctors, and knowing which one
to go to for your aesthetic enhancement can be confusing.
Read the article: "Choosing
a Cosmetic Doctor or Dentist".
While there is no one specialty that does everything
well, there are some general guidelines pertaining to
the doctors' background and training that can steer
you in the right direction.
For example, dentists can obviously perform cosmetic
dentistry, but some dentists are also maxillo-facial
surgeons who are qualified to perform surgery on the
face and jaw. Ear, nose and throat doctors may undergo
additional training in facial plastic surgery, and some
ophthalmologists (eye doctors) have additional training
in oculoplastic (eye-related) surgery or vision correction
surgery.
General plastic surgeons are trained in facial and
full body plastic and reconstructive surgery, and some
may specialize in particular in cosmetic surgery. Dermatologists
are trained to treat the skin, hair and nails, including
laser skin surgery and some dermatologists also excel
at liposuction.
And, to make it even more confusing, there's another
group of doctors called cosmetic surgeons who come from
various backgrounds but dedicate all or part of their
practice to aesthetic surgery.
Regardless of what the residency diploma on the
wall says, the most crucial factor in selecting a doctor
is the quality and quantity of recent experience in
the procedure or area in which you are interested.
This means you should look for someone with a lot of
experience in the procedure or area in which you are
interested using up-to-date techniques, with successful
results.
It is also helpful if the doctor has experience working
with features similar to yours, especially if you are
from an ethnic background other than Caucasian.
In the fields of rejuvenation and appearance enhancement,
there are thousands of qualified professionals that
can do the job, but finding the right one for you who
can produce the best possible result is the tricky part.
So where do you begin?
